Run Dynamics NAV as Different User

November 12, 2014 Posted by Olof Simren General, Miscellaneous 11 Comments

A question that I receive frequently is; ‘how do I run Dynamics NAV as a different user?’. A basic question it seems, but not everybody is aware of how it can be done.

It could for example be that you are testing permissions and you want to run one client with SUPER user access to do the permission setup and another client with limited access to test the setup at the same time. Another common scenario is that you want to debug something on a users computer and for this you need your own log-in to have full permission and access to the debugger.

Luckily it is quite easy to run Dynamics NAV as a different user without logging out of windows, here is how to do it:

Right click on the Dynamics NAV icon and select Run as Different User.

Login-As-Different-User-Dynamics-NAV

If the option does not show up when you right click, try to hold down the SHIFT key while right clicking.

Then you simply sign in with the different user through the dialog that appears and that’s it!

Run-As-Different-User-Dynamics-NAV

Now you can run two clients on the same computer logged in as two different users.

Nice, easy and very useful! 🙂

It should work the same in Windows 8.1. You need to pin it to your taskbar, have a shortcut on the desktop or right click the executable file of the NAV client. You might need to hold down Shift while right clicking.
At least that is how it works on my other computer that is running Windows 8.1.

If you want to do this off the taskbar and you already have the application running you will have to use only right-click first and then right-click with shift on the application name to run it as a different user.

Has this been removed in NAV2016?
Or am I missing something else?

Don’t know, I have not tried it with NAV 2016 yet.
I would think you can still do it since it is more of a Windows feature to run an application as another user.

If anybody else know, please leave a reply to this comment.

Still works. Didn’t use the SHIFT.
Guess it’s time to stop exploring 2016 and do something else on this Friday night…

Hi! we’re trying to run as NAV client with other user (with account in domain where NAV resides). In the “profile” in the machine wher we run as NAV client, we configured Exchange Office365 account.

When in Windows 10 we send an order via email, the NAV clients says that Outlook it’s not available (when we check the bottom option “Edit in Outlook”
But if we don’t check this option, the messages arrives.

In Windows 7 has another strange behavior. NAV clients opens a Outlook with New Message and we can “send” but the message remains in the mailbox user (Office365 Exchange Account) when the user opens the message in Outloook and selects to “send” (in the to: field appears a correct email address) the System or Outlook himself returns the message with NDR…

        Anyone???
        Thanks!

if you use a batch file you can do the same thing though the use of a variable to fill a specific users name in without the need for them to type. also this is useful when your computer is not on the same domain as the instance you’re connecting to that has the authentication mode set to windows. it works well when testing various users without the need to log off and log back in.

    @echo off
    set /p id=”Enter Windows Username: ”
    C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /netonly /user:\%id% “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\90\RoleTailored Client\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe”
