It’s the first of the month, and people that are supporting Business Central or any of the former versions such as Navision or Dynamics NAV will tell you that the first of the month is when there is always someone that tries to post a transaction and panics because they get an error message saying something like Posting Date is not within your range of allowed posting dates in Gen. Journal Line Journal Template Name=’GENERAL’,Journal Batch Name=’DAILY’,Line No.=’10000′. Its been like since I started working with this software 24 years ago.

There have been many ways to work around this, from custom job queue entries that update the allowed to and from posting dates, to processes that update the dates upon signing in.

But the days with those panic e-mail or weird workarounds seem to be behind us. Business Central now has a feature to define Date Formulas for the Allowed Posting From and Allowed Posting To. Its in the General Ledger Setup and in the User Setup. With this you can set date formulas to open the current month only based on todays date (as an example).

And date formulas to allow some of the users to still post in the prior month (like the accounting team for example).

I was so happy to see this feature that I thought it was worth a small blog post, and posting it on the first of the month made sense. It’s a bit weird what makes me happy these days. 🙂
